Odour monitoring and control at the Oum Azza waste treatment complex

Oum Azza waste treatment complex
Sector:

Need

The Oum Azza waste treatment complex, located near Rabat (Morocco), brings together controlled landfilling, biogas recovery and recycling activities. The facility is operated by the M3R consortium, of which SUEZ is a member.

SUEZ is a French group specialising in water and waste management, with an international presence. Kunak and SUEZ collaborate on various environmental monitoring projects, combining measurement and analysis technologies to improve the control of emissions and their impact on the surrounding environment.

At Oum Azza, the proximity of residential areas makes odour management particularly important. When a complaint is received, confirming that a nuisance exists is not enough. It is necessary to analyse what was happening at the facility, how emissions were dispersing and whether the complex could actually be the source of the episode.

The challenge is also to anticipate potential impacts. Odour emissions vary depending on site activities and weather conditions. Understanding their potential dispersion makes it possible to assess the risk and take preventive measures before sensitive areas are affected.

To meet this need, a network of 10 Kunak AIR Pro stations providing continuous monitoring was deployed. Their data are integrated into AirAdvanced® Sentinel, SUEZ’s modelling solution. Measurement provides accurate information at the monitored points; modelling completes this picture by representing the odour plume as a whole, its evolution over time and the areas likely to be affected, up to 48 hours in advance. The value for the client lies in an integrated solution that combines the quality of Kunak measurements with the analysis and forecasting capabilities of AirAdvanced® Sentinel.

The aim is not only to detect an odour episode, but to have the evidence needed to assess its potential source and to anticipate the conditions that could lead to an impact beyond the site boundary.

Solution

The location of the ten measurement points was determined using a model developed by SUEZ that optimises network coverage by taking several variables into account, including historical meteorological data.

The equipment configuration was also defined on the basis of an initial on-site diagnosis, adapting the monitored pollutants to the emissions expected in each area:

  • 5 stations for H2S/RSH and VOCs.
  • 2 stations for H2S/RSH and NH3.
  • 3 stations for H2S/RSH.

Several of the stations are also fitted with an ultrasonic anemometer that measures wind speed and direction on site, a key input for interpreting how odours travel. All stations operate autonomously on solar power.

The network is integrated into AirAdvanced® Sentinel, SUEZ’s tool for modelling and visualising the atmospheric dispersion of pollutants and odours, taking into account meteorology, terrain and the built environment. It shows the plume as a whole, beyond the individual measurement points, and tracks how it evolves over time.

The Kunak stations provide continuous and reliable field measurements. AirAdvanced® Sentinel enriches these data by reconstructing the spatial dispersion of odours between measurement points, analysing the potential contribution of different sources and simulating their evolution. Combining both technologies turns sensor data into a comprehensive and directly usable view of the situation.

This integration also demonstrates the interoperability of Kunak technology: its high-quality data feed directly into AirAdvanced® Sentinel and can also be integrated into third-party software and the analysis tools the client already uses. Data are sent to AirAdvanced® Sentinel from the Kunak AIR Cloud platform via the Kunak API.

The system also includes automatic alerts and reports for the local authority, making it easier to follow up and document odour episodes.

Kunak technology used

  • Kunak AIR Pro: ten solar-powered multi-parameter stations for continuous monitoring of the selected compounds. Several of them include an ultrasonic anemometer to measure wind speed and direction.
  • Smart gas cartridges: H2S/RSH, VOC and NH3 configurations adapted to the diagnosis of each area.
  • Kunak AIR Cloud: platform that centralises the network’s data.
  • Kunak API: interface that sends data from Kunak AIR Cloud to AirAdvanced® Sentinel.
  • Integration with AirAdvanced® Sentinel: data from the Kunak network are integrated into the SUEZ solution to combine measurements with atmospheric dispersion modelling.

This integration places Kunak measurements within a broader environmental monitoring architecture. It demonstrates both the ability of Kunak technology to exchange data with third-party tools and the value, for the client, of combining high-performance sensors with modelling that provides a continuous, spatial and predictive view of impacts.

Combining continuous measurements with modelling makes it possible to analyse when an odour complaint occurred and assess whether it could be linked to emissions from the facility.

Results

The network is still at an early stage. When the project was documented, the ten stations had been in place for about three weeks. The monitoring period was not yet long enough to draw conclusions about trends or operational improvements.

The deployment is completed by the integration of monitoring and modelling through AirAdvanced® Sentinel, to support complaint follow-up, episode assessment, odour impact forecasting and the management of alerts and reports.

The contract runs for four years, which will make it possible to build a record of environmental data to identify trends, study how emissions evolve and evaluate the measures implemented under different operational and weather conditions.

From odour complaints to preventive management

When a complaint is received, the data recorded by the stations, including wind speed and direction measured on site, can be cross-checked against weather conditions and modelling results to assess whether an episode is consistent with a potential impact from the facility.

This approach provides a sounder technical basis than the complaint alone, especially when there are several potential odour sources in the area.

The system can also forecast, up to 48 hours in advance, the conditions that favour odour transport and the areas likely to be affected. Operators can therefore factor this risk into operations planning, deciding when certain potentially emitting activities should be carried out, rescheduled or postponed.

Combining Kunak monitoring with SUEZ modelling makes it possible to act in two complementary directions: analysing episodes that have already occurred and anticipating situations with a higher risk of impact.

Anticipating the conditions that favour odour dispersion makes it possible to build environmental risk directly into operations planning.

Benefits for the operator

  • Better ability to respond to complaints, by checking them against measurements and dispersion conditions.
  • Objective assessment of the facility’s potential contribution to odour episodes.
  • Forecasting of odour dispersion and the areas likely to be affected up to 48 hours in advance, to support preventive operational decisions.
  • Automated alerts and reports to facilitate environmental follow-up.
  • Continuous data record to identify trends and evaluate the measures implemented.
  • Greater traceability for the management and communication of odour episodes.
