Air quality analysis using mobile stations in Belgium

Need

The Inter-University Microelectronics Centre (IMEC) expressed interest in conducting an air quality study using sensor-based mobile monitoring stations to analyse pollutant concentrations, both spatially and temporally, and thus develop models based on mobile air quality data and interpolate the readings.

Official air quality monitoring networks are scientifically robust and accurate but have a very limited spatial resolution as pollutant concentrations can vary greatly in space and time.

This is why IMEC wanted to analyse the potential of complementary air quality sensor networks, which allow local sampling at different locations and over time.

Solution

Supply of 20 Kunak AIR Mobile devices with GPS for the monitoring of pollutant gas and particle parameters.

Completed actions

  • Deployment of a sensor network with embedded wireless communications.
  • Periodic reporting of the data obtained.
  • Kunak Cloud platform for the operational management of the sensor network.

Results

Deployment of a mobile monitoring network that allows local sampling and thus complements official station networks that have limited spatial monitoring resolution.

  • Validation of this type of sensor-based technology for air quality analysis.

  • Collection of detailed representative measurements.
  • Analysis of the impact of traffic and nearby industries on air quality.
  • Remote management and calibration of the sensor network.
