Need
The Oum Azza waste treatment complex, located near Rabat (Morocco), brings together controlled landfilling, biogas recovery and recycling activities. The facility is operated by the M3R consortium, of which SUEZ is a member.
SUEZ is a French group specialising in water and waste management, with an international presence. Kunak and SUEZ collaborate on various environmental monitoring projects, combining measurement and analysis technologies to improve the control of emissions and their impact on the surrounding environment.
At Oum Azza, the proximity of residential areas makes odour management particularly important. When a complaint is received, confirming that a nuisance exists is not enough. It is necessary to analyse what was happening at the facility, how emissions were dispersing and whether the complex could actually be the source of the episode.
The challenge is also to anticipate potential impacts. Odour emissions vary depending on site activities and weather conditions. Understanding their potential dispersion makes it possible to assess the risk and take preventive measures before sensitive areas are affected.
To meet this need, a network of 10 Kunak AIR Pro stations providing continuous monitoring was deployed. Their data are integrated into AirAdvanced® Sentinel, SUEZ’s modelling solution. Measurement provides accurate information at the monitored points; modelling completes this picture by representing the odour plume as a whole, its evolution over time and the areas likely to be affected, up to 48 hours in advance. The value for the client lies in an integrated solution that combines the quality of Kunak measurements with the analysis and forecasting capabilities of AirAdvanced® Sentinel.
