Odour monitoring in wastewater treatment plants in Oman

Nama Water Services (NWS)
Sector:

Need

Nama Water Services (NWS) is one of Oman’s largest public companies, responsible for the production and management of energy and water across the country. In recent years, the company has reinforced its environmental policy, placing particular emphasis on air quality monitoring and odour control across its wastewater treatment plants.

The presence of sulphur compounds, ammonia and certain volatile organic compounds (H2S, NH3 and VOCs) had led to odour nuisance episodes in several communities located near treatment facilities. These events not only affected public perception but also required stronger technical evidence to manage complaints and prioritise corrective actions.

Nama identified the need for a reliable, versatile and continuous monitoring system capable of:

  • Delivering real-time environmental data
  • Comparing performance across multiple plants
  • Supporting objective decision-making
  • Operating under demanding climatic conditions
  • Providing full traceability for internal environmental reporting

The company sought a decentralised solution that would combine operational flexibility with high data reliability, enabling both preventive analysis and responsive action in odour management.

The use of Kunak stations has enabled us to obtain reliable data under complex environmental conditions and strengthen our commitment to responsible environmental management.

Solution

To address these requirements, Nama Water Services (NWS) deployed a network of 28 Kunak AIR Pro stations, each equipped with hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ammonia (NH3) and volatile organic compound (VOC) sensors.

The stations are distributed across multiple wastewater treatment plants located in different cities throughout Oman. Their design allows for energy autonomy through solar panels and internal batteries, enabling continuous operation without reliance on fixed electrical infrastructure. In addition, their portability allows the company to rotate equipment between plants according to operational priorities.

All units are integrated into the Kunak Cloud platform, where technicians can:

  • Visualise real-time data
  • Detect trends and anomalies
  • Generate automated reports
  • Access calibration records and quality control procedures
  • Maintain full time traceability of environmental data

The system supports both daily operational monitoring and structured environmental reporting. Furthermore, the network enables correlations between process conditions, wind direction and detected odorous compound levels, strengthening preventive analysis capabilities.

Results

The deployment of the Kunak monitoring network has provided Nama Water Services (NWS) with a comprehensive and data-driven understanding of odour impact across its facilities.

Continuous measurements revealed recurring H2S peaks at several plants, particularly linked to septic influent arrivals and specific time periods. This insight allowed targeted adjustments to headworks ventilation systems and chemical dosing strategies, reducing both the intensity and frequency of recorded odour episodes.

Benefits

As a result, Nama can now:

  • Identify predominant odour sources and prioritise corrective measures
  • Optimise ventilation and chemical dosing at critical process stages
  • Compare plant performance under varying climatic conditions
  • Establish preventive maintenance protocols based on objective data
  • Maintain continuous, traceable environmental records for regulatory support

The availability of objective, continuous data has improved incident response capacity and strengthened the company’s technical position when addressing complaints and environmental assessments.

Nama’s equipment rotation strategy has also maximised investment value while enabling comparative analysis between multiple plants. The project has become a regional benchmark in environmental monitoring applied to wastewater treatment, demonstrating how scalable and autonomous monitoring networks can support odour control, operational optimisation and long-term environmental management under complex climatic conditions.
