Advanced air quality monitoring at the port of Le Havre

Need

The Port of Le Havre, managed by HAROPA PORT, is a key logistics hub in Europe and one of France’s most active industrial-port areas. However, intense maritime, industrial, and land-based activities generate emissions that impact air quality, affecting both the environment and the health of workers and nearby communities. To address this challenge, HAROPA PORT has developed a sustainability strategy that includes enhancing environmental monitoring with advanced technological solutions.

As part of this initiative, HAROPA PORT, in collaboration with Atmo Normandie and the Incub’air laboratory, launched the CAPT’AIN project (Characterisation of the Performance of Miniaturised Air Sensors). The objective was to assess the feasibility of miniaturised monitoring stations to complement the existing network, improving the spatial and temporal resolution of air quality data.

These solutions needed to provide real-time measurements, be easily deployable, and enable a faster response to pollution events. To achieve this, sensors were installed at strategic locations throughout the port to efficiently identify and mitigate key emission sources.

With this approach, HAROPA PORT strengthens its environmental commitment and optimises air quality management in one of France’s most dynamic areas.

Thanks to the Kunak sensor network, the Port of Le Havre can now monitor air quality with unprecedented precision, enabling more effective and sustainable environmental management.

Solution

To improve air quality monitoring at the Port of Le Havre, HAROPA PORT and Atmo Normandie implemented an advanced technological solution based on Kunak AIR Pro monitoring stations, supplied by Acoem Francia. Five stations were installed at strategic locations across the port, ensuring comprehensive coverage and reinforcing the existing monitoring network.

Kunak AIR stations are distinguished by their ability to accurately measure key pollutants, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen monoxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5). With real-time connectivity, HAROPA PORT now has instant access to air quality data, receives automatic alerts, and can respond more quickly to pollution events.

This technology enhances traditional monitoring by offering a more flexible and accessible solution tailored to the port’s dynamic environment. It also facilitates the identification of emission sources and optimises decision-making for corrective actions. With this initiative, HAROPA PORT reinforces its environmental commitment and lays the foundation for future pollution mitigation efforts in one of Europe’s most important logistics hubs.

This approach has driven new green transition initiatives, such as the electrification of maritime terminals, aligning with the port’s sustainability commitments. Additionally, transparent data access has improved communication with local communities, allowing residents to stay informed about air quality in their surroundings and increasing trust in the port’s environmental actions.

Results

Since the installation of Kunak stations, HAROPA PORT has significantly improved air quality monitoring across its industrial-port zone. The real-time detection capability allows for more precise identification of pollution sources and their correlation with port activities and meteorological conditions.

Thanks to the accuracy of Kunak sensors, HAROPA PORT and Atmo Normandie have strengthened their environmental monitoring system, obtaining key data for decision-making. They can now respond more efficiently to poor air quality episodes, coordinating actions with environmental authorities and port operators. Furthermore, real-time data enables the implementation of more effective strategies to reduce emissions and minimise the environmental impact of industrial activity.
