Need

The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) manages the Subic Bay International Airport (SBIA), one of the main airports in the Philippines. It was conceived as a key logistics and international air transport hub for corporate and business aviation.

In line with its sustainability goals and in compliance with the Clean Air Act of 1999, the SBMA launched an ambitious environmental initiative aimed at monitoring and managing air quality and noise levels in airport operations.
This project reinforces SBMA’s commitment to a cleaner, safer and more sustainable environment, setting a benchmark for the region.

Airport operations — aircraft movements, ground traffic, machinery and logistics activities — generate emissions and noise that directly affect environmental quality and public perception.

SBIA needed reliable, real-time data to identify pollution sources, assess their impact and apply effective corrective measures, all in line with the highest international standards.

Thanks to the deployed monitoring network, Subic Bay International Airport now obtains accurate, real-time data that enables it to anticipate and mitigate the environmental impact of its operations.

Solution

To achieve this, the airport implemented a comprehensive air quality and noise monitoring network by installing several Kunak AIR Pro sensors at strategic points within the facilities (buildings 8050 and 8015).

Data are transmitted in real time via the Kunak AIR Cloud web platform, allowing users to visualise, analyse and generate automatic reports from anywhere. This enables proactive environmental management and evidence-based decision-making to optimise airport operations.

The Subic Bay project demonstrates how Kunak AIR Pro technology can transform environmental management at modern airports. By integrating continuous air and noise monitoring with advanced analysis and remote-control tools, SBMA has taken a decisive step towards more sustainable, transparent and efficient operations.

This experience has become an international reference for other airports and port authorities seeking to reduce emissions, improve environmental performance, and move towards cleaner and more responsible aviation.

Results

The new system has provided SBIA with high-resolution, real-time information on air quality, ambient noise and meteorological conditions throughout the airport area.

Thanks to integrated alarms and configurable alerts, technical staff can respond immediately to any threshold exceedance, reducing response times and improving operational safety.

The advanced analytics of Kunak AIR Cloud offer a detailed view of pollutant behaviour and sound levels, helping the airport authority make informed decisions to control emissions and mitigate the environmental impact of its activities.
