A food processing plant located in the western industrial zone of Singapore sought to evaluate the impact of emissions from its production processes on the environment. Despite having an odour mitigation system based on ozone generation, there were concerns about the potential effects of emissions on the surrounding air quality. The primary objective was to quickly and accurately gather information to make informed decisions, either to optimise the odour mitigation technologies or to implement corrective actions to minimise environmental impact.

The Kunak AIR sensor network enabled the collection of fast and reliable data on key pollutants and environmental conditions, correlating them with production processes to assess the real impact of emissions and support real-time decision-making.

Solution

A Kunak AIR sensor network was deployed, featuring stations powered by solar panels and equipped with an anemometer. These stations facilitated the rapid collection of reliable data on pollutant levels, including NO2, O3, CO, SO2, VOCs, and particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1). Environmental variables such as temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, wind direction and precipitation were also measured. The data were correlated with production schedules to identify causal trends between industrial processes and air quality, generating useful visual representations, such as pollution rose charts.

Results

The analysis indicated that the air quality around the plant was satisfactory and remained within WHO guidelines. A direct correlation was observed between increased ozone levels and production hours, confirming that emissions were consistent with the plant’s activities. However, the data also suggested that the current odour mitigation measures had no significant impact on ambient air quality. This provided a solid foundation for planning future studies should changes be made to the plant’s exhaust system configurations.
