The last 1st of December of 2019, Kunak Technologies made the monitoring and measurement of the air quality and the environmental conditions before and during the Valencia Marathon Trinidad Alfonso EDP to find out how air pollution impacts to the athletes’ health and performance. This marathon was organized by SD Correcaminos and Ajuntament de València with the support of World Athletics.

Working in collaboration with UN Environment (UNEP), the project kicked off in September 2018 when the first air quality monitoring device was installed at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, followed by similar installations at stadiums in Addis Ababa, Sydney, Mexico City and Yokohama. That project will link many World Athletics-certified tracks around the world to create a real-time global air quality database.

Then, armed with that data, World Athletics can help organizers, municipalities and local policymakers to make better and more informed decisions about their events to improve the health, safety and well-being of the athletes participating.

To monitor the Air Quality, the chosen device was the Kunak AIR Mobile and it measured the NO, NO2, O3, CO, PM1, PM2.5, PM10, temperature, humidity and pressure.

Here is the full course of the marathon:

A bike was used to collect data the day before the race and another mobile monitoring device was mounted on the women’s lead clock car during the marathon. Other devices to measure black carbon concentrations and ultrafine particle concentrations were installed in several places in the itinerary.

This event was a very nice opportunity to collect data and its later analysis because it was an IAAF Gold Label race, it was going to be the first European marathon to be monitored, it was a completely flat circuit and the Elite Marathon champions were going to participate.
