1. Considerations when deploying a sensor-based air quality network (presented by Edurne Ibarrola. Co-authors: Miguel Escribano and Javier Fernández)
More and more governments are turning to networks based on sensor stations as a complement to reference systems for air pollution monitoring. The deployment of this type of network, however, requires several considerations to be taken into account. One of the most relevant is related to the development, optimisation and refinement of advanced sensor calibration and validation techniques. After all, this is the basis for Kunak to achieve unquestionable data quality.
2. How can non-exhaust motorsports events improve urban air quality in cities with hyper-local monitoring? (presented by Edurne Ibarrola. Co-authors: Tom Verity, Iona Neilson and Edurne Ibarrola)
Based on data provided by reference stations, satellites and sensors deployed during the Berlin E-Prix 2021, we evaluated a new methodology for managing air quality during ABB Formula-E events. The experience allowed us to
- gather evidence of an event within international standards;
- certify that the impact on the receptors (attendees, organisation’s equipment and staff, etc.) is dynamic and low;
- identify the sources of emissions external and internal to the sporting event;
- provide digital tools to educate fans; and
- fill the data gap
3. Reducing personal exposure of recreational runners to airborne particles in urban environments (presented by Mar Viana. Co-authors: Cristina Reche, Miguel Escribano, Paolo Adami and Stéphane Bermon)
The aim of this study was to estimate the reduction in exposure to fine particles that can be achieved by controlling personal exposure when running in a city. The collaboration of volunteer runners equipped with portable monitors showed that a small change in sporting habits (e.g. running in a park) could significantly reduce exposure to PM2.5 particles.
4. Opportunistic mobile air quality mapping using service fleet vehicles: from point clouds to actionable insights (presented by Jelle Hofman. Co-authors: Valerio Panzica, Edurne Ibarrola, M.E. and Martine Van Poppel)
This paper describes the project developed by IMEC The Netherlands installing Kunak mobile sensors on postal delivery vans in Antwerp (Belgium).
This initiative demonstrated the validity and suitability of these stations to better understand the spatiotemporal dynamics of pollutants and the range of exposure to urban air pollution.
5. Air quality monitoring in athletics stadiums: can low-cost sensor technologies support guidance for international competitions? (presented by Mar Viana. Co-authors: Kostas Karatzas, Thanos Arvanitis, Cristina Reche, Miguel Escribano, Edurne Ibarrola, Paolo Adami, Stéphane Bermon)
This work shows the usefulness of cost-effective monitors in sporting events. The objectives pursued are as follows
- reduce the exposure of athletes and spectators to pollutants;
- provide recommendations to organisers on the use of this type of solution to monitor air quality;
- minimise the impact that pollution can have on sporting performance, and
- facilitate decision-making on the potential cancellation or delay of a sporting event due to environmental conditions.
The results of this study are supported by the close collaboration between World Athletics and Kunak, a relationship that has allowed us to test and validate our solutions in numerous international athletics events.
